What we do
We are an Australian Government agency responsible for administering the major superannuation schemes available to Australian Defence Force members and the majority of Australian Government employees.
We provide superannuation administration services under authority from the Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation who is responsible for the Commonwealth Superannuation Scheme (CSS), Public Sector Superannuation (PSS) scheme, Public Sector Superannuation accumulation plan (PSSap), Military Superannuation and Benefits (MilitarySuper) scheme and the Defence Force Retirement and Death Benefits (DFRDB) scheme.
These schemes are amongst the largest and most complex occupational superannuation schemes in Australia. There is a combined membership of over 687,000 contributors, pensioners and preserved benefit members. Details of scheme membership and other statistical information can be obtained from the respective scheme annual reports and the Commissioner for Superannuation Annual Report to Parliament.
The superannuation administration services we provide include:
- collection of member contributions and maintenance of member accounts
- payment of lump sum and pension benefits
- member communications
- accounting services
- dispute resolution
- secretariat support functions.
Certain PSSap member and employer services are done by Pillar Administration.
Superannuation policy for Australian Government employees is the responsibility of the Superannuation Branch in the Department of Finance and Deregulation. They advise the Minister for Finance and Deregulation on policy and financial management issues relating to the CSS, PSS and PSSap schemes.
Superannuation policy for Australian Defence Force members is the responsibility of the Superannuation Section in the Department of Defence.
Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation
The Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation (CSC) is responsible for the management of the investment funds of the schemes. The CSC also reports annually to Parliament on the management of these schemes, including investment matters.
